A 28-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, belonging to different castes, committed suicide at Nindana village of the district in the wee hours of Friday.
The man was identified as Sanjay Kumar, who belonged to the Jat community, while the woman, Manisha Rani, was a Scheduled Caste. Kumar was found hanging from a tree while Rani was found dead in a field near Meham town of the district.
As per details, Kumar, who was a part-time folk singer, and Rani were in a relationship for about 18 months. The trouble started when Rani was married on June 23 to a man in Jind district reportedly against her wishes. Rani had come to her paternal house on Thursday and she fled with Sanjay during the night.
Police found multiple knife wounds on Rani's body, making them believe that Sanjay eliminated her committing suicide by hanging himself from a tree. Police have recovered Sanjay's motorcycle parked near the crime spot.
Upon intimation, police reached the spot and informed victims' parents, who refused to lodge any complaint with the police. The bodies were sent for post-mortem to the Rohtak medical college, said police.
Meham deputy superintendent of police Mukesh Jakhar said that according to preliminary investigations, it seemed to be a case of suicide pact.
The post-mortem report was awaited till the filing of the report, while kin of the victims refused to share any details with the media.
