A day after the BJP’s disastrous performance in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls, Women and Child Development (WCD) minister Maneka Gandhi quipped about her son, Varun Gandhi, to be brought back into the UP political scenario.
Many of BJP’s star campaigners, including Varun Gandhi, were missing from UP during the bypolls. Maneka Gandhi had courted controversy in August over her remark at a rally in Pilibhit that her son and BJP MP Varun Gandhi would be a good chief minister for the state.
On the controversy surrounding “love jihad” a term used by Hindu hardliners for Muslim men marrying Hindu girls who are later converted to Islam, Maneka said that she had come across such cases in her constituency.
“We have no official complaint in the ministry but as an MP, I have received 7-8 complaints from my constituency. I have forwarded the complaints to the police,” she said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Maneka Gandhi clarified her recent statement that money earned from illegal cow slaughter was being used to fund terrorism. “I was quoting from a report of the Uttar Pradesh police. The report is available. I did not make it up,” the WCD minister said.
