Manipur drug trail leads to senior Congress MLA's son

Police in Manipur capital Imphal said they arrested Saikholen Haokip on Monday night on the basis of information provided by an army colonel caught on Sunday ferrying psychotropic substances to Moreh town bordering Myanmar.

Saikholen, 35, the son of senior Congress legislator TN Haokip, was arrested from the latter's private residence. The police found in his possession four cartons containing 2,316 strips of pseudoephedrine tablets used for making party drugs.

"We lodged three FIRs under Section 21/19 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act against Saikholen," a police officer said, adding the MLA's son was produced before a local magistrate on Tuesday and remanded to police custody till March 18.

Saikholen's arrest came after army PRO Ajay Chaudhary and five others were remanded to police custody for 12 days. They were caught by the police in Thoubal district on Sunday for carrying drugs worth Rs 15 crore in official vehicles.

Meanwhile, a landmine planted by militants killed a soldier of the 1/11 Gorkha Regiment and injured three others in Manipur's Churachandpur district on Tuesday. Police said the soldiers were on foot patrol duty when the landmine exploded near near the Torbung bridge, 55km south of Imphal.
