People took to the streets here on Sunday after Tehelka magazine reported that the July 23 shootout in the state capital, barely 500 metres from the assembly, was “fake”.

Protesters shouted anti-government slogans and demanded judicial inquiry. Police had to fire teargas shells and water cannon to control them.

Apunba Lup, conglomeration of several organisations, called for a 48-hour statewide bandh from Sunday midnight.

“We demand punishment of accused police commandos,” said Phulindro Konsam, spokesman of Apunba Lup. He also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi.

The Secular Progressive Front government has instituted a magisterial inquiry. Additional Secretary (Home) Yaiskul has asked Deputy Commissioner, Imphal West, A. Ibomcha to submit the report within 30 days.

On July 23, a pregnant woman in her early twenties, Rabina Devi, and a youth, Ch Sanjit, (27), were allegedly killed in a gunbattle with security forces.

Five others, including two women and an Assam Rifles jawan, were wounded in the firing that started around 10.30 am and continued for about 15 minutes near the crowded Women’s Bazaar on BT Road.
