The Maoists triggered a powerful blast on the road hitting the second vehicle of the convoy and opened indiscriminate firing at around 4 pm near the dense forested terrain of Darbha about 40 km from Jagdalpur district.

It appeared to be a well-planned move by the rebels who had known about the arrival of the convoy and had blocked the road.

Unconfirmed sources said there were over 100 naxals who fired indiscriminately on the Congressmen.

The only retaliation to the Maoist firing was from the personal security officers of the Congress leaders.
