The Naxalites suffered another major setback when one of its dalam (squad) members was gunned down by the police in an encounter near Murumgaon area in north Gadchiroli, bordering Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.

The police said the incident took place in Pannemara jungle near Murumgaon in Dhanora tehsil after the Naxalites opened fire on a C-60 team of elite anti-Naxalite commandos.

After an hour of gunbattle, one Naxalite was killed and several were injured. The police did not suffer any casualties.
Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Sharma said a group of around 40-50 armed Maoists opened fire on the C-60 when the police team was patrolling the area.

The body of the deceased Naxalite has also been recovered from the jungle. He is yet to be identified. The police also seized arms and ammunition and Naxalite literature from the spot. Security has been beefed up in the district in view of Assembly polls on October 13.
