A Maoist was killed on Wednesday in an encounter with police some 170 km from Karimnagar, police said.

G Sampath of Mahadevpur area was killed after police retaliated when the Maoist opened fire near Peddavagu Nimmagudem and Pegadapalli villages, they said.

On a tip off that some Maoists have assembled near Peddavagu, a special police party reached the spot in the early hours, district Superintendent of Police Y Gangadhar said.

Two other Maoists escaped taking advantage of the darkness, he said adding two kit bags, one .38 revolver and empty cartridges have been recovered from the slain Maoist.

Sampath was involved in as many as ten offences including four murders.

He was also the main accused in the murder of Gore Mia, a Congress leader, who was killed by Maoists on December 27, 2007, Gangadhar added.
