A Maoist was killed during an encounter with security forces, in which a police officer was also injured. The incident occurred in East Singhbhum district on Sunday, a senior police officer said.

A Maoist, identified as Joru, was killed in the encounter while the bodyguard of additional superintendent of police (ASP) was injured, police said. ASP Shailendra Burnwal, who led the anti-Naxal combing operation, said three cases were pending against Joru.

A pistol and five live cartridges were recovered from his possession, he said, adding that the injured police officer was taken to a hospital. The exchange took place when the security personnel were on their routine patrolling in the Naxalism-affected areas of the Ghatsila sub-division in the district.
