A Maoist involved in several attacks today surrendered before the police in Gajapati district following disillusionment with the rebels, police said.

The ultra, identified as Jayob Majhi of Raiganda village under Adaba area, had joined the Maoists about five years ago, district Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Arora told reporters in Orissa.

The rebel was involved in several operations including attacks on forest offices, landmine explosions and torching of government buses in Gajapati district, he said.

Majhi decided to lay down arms as he felt exploited by the seniors, who perpetrated violence on innocent and common people without showing any regard for the ideology and path advocated by Mao, police said.

He has now decided to return to the mainstream and lead a normal life.
