Suspected Maoists have beheaded a man and taken away his head leaving the body near Koleng Nawadih village of Gumla district, police said on Monday.

Agitated villagers, who found the headless body on Monday morning, blocked the NH-23 near Baghima village, demanding arrest of the killers and adequate compensation to the family of the deceased.

Police said they suspect that those who had killed the man on Sunday night were Maoists.

The blockade was removed after the police assured the villagers that they would launch raids to catch the culprits and ask the administration to consider their demand for compensation to the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, an activist of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) was arrested from Tetra village in the district.

Police said they seized a country-made pistol from the activist, identified as Keswar Gop. He faces nine cases, including muder cases, they added.
