Maoists used landmines on early Monday to blast newly built houses for police officials in Orissa's Malkangiri district, a police official said.

Guerrillas of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) exploded landmines at the empty houses which are part of a jail complex being built in MV 79 village, about 750 km from here.

A district police official told IANS the Maoists ran into a nearby forest after destroying the houses. A police party has been sent to the spot.
