A day after Maoist rebels killed a Member of Parliament in Jharkhand, a local Congress leader in Andhra Pradesh was shot on Monday by Maoists while he was inspecting a road construction project in Mahabubnagar district.
Prakash, a member of the local Mandal Praja Parishad (MPP), was shot in Marikal, about 150 kms south of this capital city, by two armed Maoists at point blank range.
The ruling Congress member died immediately while the assailants escaped. The workers around also ran in panic.
The action by the Communist Party of India-Maoist is being viewed as a revenge for guerrillas being killed in police firing.
In the latest incident on Friday, police gunned down three Maoists near Rajhamundry in East Godavari district.
In Jharkhand state in eastern India, Maoist guerrillas on Sunday had killed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Sunil Mahato.
