Five Chhattisgarh policemen were killed and three others injured in an attack by Maoists in Chhattisgarh on Friday.

Twelve policemen riding six bikes were on way to offer protection to the workers constructing a road between Kuakondo and Bacheli in Shyamgiri area of Dantewada district, 450km south of Raipur, the police said.

A group of Maoists waiting in ambush atop a hill fired at the policemen, killing five of them on the spot. Additional director general of police (anti-Maoist operation) RK Vij said the rebels set three motorbikes on fire and fled after looting the weapons of the dead policemen.

While returning the Maoist's fire, the surviving policemen messaged the Bacheli police station officials and requested for reinforcements.

Had the security personnel from Bacheli not reached the spot while the gunfight was still on, the casualties would have been higher, Vij said.

In November last year, four CRPF personnel were killed in an ambush near Nukanpal in Bijapur district. In one of the biggest attacks, 27 persons including top state Congress leaders were killed by Maoists on May 25 in Bastar region.

A couple of years ago, Dantewada was ranked as India's worst Maoist violence-hit district.
