Maoists shot dead one person in MV-96 area, about 80 km from Malkangiri in Saturday, as they suspected him to be a police informer, police said.

The victim, identified as Asirama (35) of Kotanpalli village under Tandapai gram panchayat, was taken by the ultras into the forest around mid-night and his body was found along a road today, Superintendent of Police Satyabrata Bhoi said.

He was identified with much difficulty as the Maoists had disfigured his face by hitting it with some blunt objects after he was shot, the SP said.

A hand written note found near the body warned that those passing on information to the police and acting as their informers would meet similar fate, he said.

A massive combing operation and intensive patrolling had been launched by the police force in the area to track down the ultras and senior officials also rushed to the site, police said, adding that the body was sent for post-mortem.

The killing has created panic among the local residents as the Maoists have been trying to force youths of the area to join their cadre besides targeting people who are helping the police personnel, sources said.
