I prefer women. I am dating Veronica. She is 31-years old, she is blonde," responded Argentinean coach Diego Maradona at a FIFA World Cup press conference to a translated question from a BBC sports journalist on the affection he shows for his players. That explanation, though, hasn’t dampened the spirit of netizens keen on discussing the 49-year-old’s sexual orientation.
Thanks to his style of appreciating his team, which also involves frequently smooching the players, the net-o-sphere seems to be wondering the exact same thing as the BBC journalist.
On popular websites Yahoo answers and Wiki answers, many have popped the question: ‘Is Maradona gay?’ The answers are varied. “He looks like it by the way he hugs and kisses people when he celebrates,” said one user. Others disagreed, rather aggressively. “He loves women and it’s been proved... read his autobiography. He’s slept with plenty of women,” posts another.
Such news is not new to Maradona. In November 2005, he was photographed locking lips with Hollywood actor Colin Farrell when the two met at a restaurant in Buenos Aires.
Maradona, who denied being ‘limp-wristed’ in the FIFA interview, explained the affection he shows for players as “appreciation for the work done and nothing more.”
Still, the topic continues to be popular, even on sports forums. On the website nbcsports.com, Andrew, a user, writes, “In Argentina, men usually kiss each other as a greeting.” “Don’t call Maradona gay or I WILL block you,” writes DiegoFTW on Twitter. “Every coach celebrates with his players... Maradona’s just a little more enthusiastic,” tweets bob_c.
Some, meanwhile, have a different approach. “Why the “limp wristed” comment? Not a fan,” writes Trevor McGee on outsports.com. “No, he’s not gay. He’s with me,” writes a blogger.
