As the elections near, Maratha outfits are getting more aggressive with their demand for reservations in government jobs and education.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had to meet leaders of Maratha organisations and promise that a decision on their demand for reservations would be taken before the election code of conduct came into force.

Following Chavan’s assurance, the Maratha Seva Sangh and Sambhaji Brigade decided to withdraw their agitation. The orgnisations had earlier threatend to bar Chavan from entering the Shivneri fort on Thursday, when he is scheduled to attend a function to mark the birth anniversary of Maratha warrior king Shivaji.

Pune DSP Ravindra Kadam confirmed the developments. The CM, meanwhile, has said he will convene an all-party meeting on the issue.
