The Orissa government on Monday said it would not allow marathon kid Budhia Singh to run anymore as it could affect the four-and-a-half-year-old’s health.

“We will not allow him to run because if he develops ill health, people will blame the government,” Woman and Child Development Minister Pramila Mallik said. Budhia ran an astounding 65 km — from Puri to Bhubaneswar — in seven hours and two minutes to earn a place in the Limca Book of World Records.

The boy’s medical report said he could get arthritis, heart problems and suffer from stunted growth if groomed unscientifically as a runner. A team of doctors at the Capital Hospital conducted tests and submitted a 13-page interim report to the Child Welfare Committee.

The committee is probing charges that Biranchi Das, the boy’s coach and adoptive father, is exploiting him for personal gains. “Budhia appears undernourished with anaemia and angular stomatitis. His pulse and blood pressure rates are on the higher side," the medical team said.

Doctors have asked for a complete range of investigations, including MRI scan of his elbows, wrists, ankles and knee joints to ascertain if Budhia’s frequent long distance running have caused any deformations. However, Das has slammed the test report as “manipulated”.
