As many as 16,000 children from various schools and colleges participated in the Salwan Marathon in the Capital on Sunday. The turnout lent credence to the view that kids in the country are keen on sports if only they get the right opportunity.
The 3.2 km run by the visually impaired children began from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The competitive spirit of the participants was described by Panchali, one of the volunteers, “My partner made me run so hard that I got dehydrated and had to take glucose.”
But the event had its share of hitches. Those who did not finish in the top ten scrambled for certificates of participation and a scuffle broke out. The organisers had to announce that the certificates would be sent to the respective schools.
Overage participants were another problem as the winners of fifth and sixth position in the Under-16 category for boys were disqualified. In the Under-14 run for girls, there was confusion over the real winner. Finally, it was sorted out!
