Srinivasan be replaced by Gavaskar; don't allow CSK, RR to play in IPL7: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Thursday proposed former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar be appointed as interim chief of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in place of N Srinivasan till it gives its final verdict in the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and spot-fixing case. This came after Srinivasan told the apex court he is ready to step down as the BCCI chief until the court completes its investigation.
Storms ground MH370 air search after new debris sighting
High winds and icy weather halted the air search on Thursday for the missing MH370 jet presumed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean, just as new satellite images emerged showing what could be a large debris field from the plane. The latest possible sightings of wreckage from Flight MH370, which went missing 19 days ago, were captured by Thai and Japanese satellites in roughly the same remote expanse of sea as earlier images reported by France, Australia and China.
India abstains from UN Vote on Sri Lanka
India on Thursday abstained from voting as the United Nations Human Rights panel passed a resolution on Sri Lanka seeking an international probe on allegations of war crimes, according to TV reports. Sri Lanka is under international pressure to deal with war crimes allegedly committed in the final stage of a 26-year conflict, in which the army defeated separatist Tamil Tiger rebels five years ago.
Subrata Roy to stay in jail till April 3, Sahara says can't pay Rs 10,000cr for bail
Sahara chief Subrata Roy may have to remain in jail for at least another week because his lawyers say they are finding it difficult to immediately mobilise Rs 10,000 crores needed to get him and two directors out on bail. A day after the apex court imposed a condition that Roy will be freed on bail only if he pays Rs 10,000 crore out of which Rs 5,000 crore has to be in bank guarantee, his lawyers said providing a guarantee of this size with lower margin cash backed by assets will take at least three months.
Shun guns, pick up plough and pen: Modi to Maoists
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed to the Maoists to follow non-violence and stop spilling of the blood of innocent people in the country. He was addressing the Bharat Vijay Rally at Gumla, which is a highly Maoist affected district in Jharkhand, around 100 kilometers west of capital of Ranchi. "Don't arm the gullible youth with guns," the Gujarat chief minister exhorted.
India is polio-free after 3 years with no new case
The World Health Organisation (WHO)'s south-east Asia regional ceritification commission for polio eradication officially declared the region polio free on Thursday, three years after the last case of wild polio virus was reported from India. In the certification event, held at WHO-SER office in New Delhi, certificates were handed over to chairpersons of national certification committes for polio erdiction and health ministers of member states of the region.
Two alleged Pakistani militants arrested in UP
The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorist squad (ATS) on Wednesday night arrested two suspected Pakistani terrorists who were allegedly planning suicide attacks on political leaders including BJP leader Narendra Modi and disrupt the parliamentary polls. The two alleged terrorists – identified only as Murtaza and Owais -- were picked up from the Gorakhpur railway station following a tip-off by the arrested operational chief of Indian Mujahideen (IM) Tehseen Akhtar.
Bihar: Maoists blow up mobile towers ahead of Modi rally
Maoists blew up two mobile towers exploding powerful bombs in two areas of Gaya district ahead of two election rallies of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday. About one hundred Maoists gathered in the areas and blew up two mobile towers of a private company by exploding powerful bombs at Manjhauli and Dumaria Bazar villages late last night, Superintendent of Police Nishant Tewari said.

Expelled DMK leader and son ofparty partriarch M Karunanidhi M K Alagiri on Thursday called on his half-sister and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi in Chennai. A day after he visited his mother Dayalu Ammal when his father was away for campaigning, Alagiri met Kanimozhi at her CIT Colony residence in Chennai and was closeted with her for about an hour.
Bin Laden son-in-law guilty on US terror charges
A New York jury on Wednesday found Osama bin Laden's son-in-law guilty of conspiracy to kill Americans and supporting terrorists as an impassioned Al-Qaeda spokesman in 2001-2002. Suleiman Abu Ghaith, 48, now faces life in a maximum security American prison after a three-week trial, which has been the highest-profile Al-Qaeda case to reach a US federal court.

Actor Kalki Koechlin has come up with a 'Womanifesto' for the upcoming general elections. The other women behind this initiative are advocate Karuna Nundy, Kavita Krishnan of the All India Progressive Women Association, Centre for Advocacy and Research executive director Akhila Sivadas and Kavita Srivastava of the Peoples' Union of Civil Liberties.
9% of candidates 'face' criminal cases in first phase of LS polls
The National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in their analysis of the affidavits of all 64 candidates, who are contesting in the first phase of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, found six candidates or 9% among them face criminal cases. They also dug into their financial background to see that 16 or 25% have assets worth Rs. 1 crore or more.
