After large-scale violence in the campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) following murder of a student on Sunday night, the university was closed sine die on Monday.
The Home Department spokesman GK Tandon told journalists in Lucknow that some unidentified people murdered a student of BSc part II Mazhar Naeem on Sunday night. Naeem, who belonged to Baghpat, was staying in Mumtaz Hall of Aftab Hostel.
Enraged students set afire Vice Chancellor lodge, Proctor Office, Teaching Staff club and the canteen, Tandon said. The students also looted the properties.
The police have constituted three teams of Special Task Force (STF) to investigate the case. He said seven companies of PAC and Rapid Action Force (RAF) had been deployed in the campus. Additional police force had also been rushed from adjoining districts to control the situation, Tandon said and added university had been closed sine die. The situation was tense in the campus.
According to report from Aligarh at an emergency meeting of the local members of the Executive Council and Dean of Faculties, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof PK Abdul Azis took stock of the prevailing situation and ordered closure of the University and its institutions with immediate effect.
The University authorities have asked the students to vacate the hostels within 48 hours. The Vice Chancellor told journalists that it had been decided to ask central government for CBI probe into the murder and vandalism on the campus.
The council would also probe into incidents during the last one year by a retired judge of Supreme Court. Prof Azis has called upon the students and others to maintain peace on the campus.
IG Kanpur zone SN Singh and other senior police officers have also rushed to Aligarh to review the situation. The district administration has deployed heavy police force including RAF and PAC at VC Lodge, administrative block and other important places on the campus.
