Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo and Venus Williams pulled out of next week's Rogers Cup with injuries on Wednesday.
World No. 1 Mauresmo (shoulder) and Williams (wrist) haven't played since Wimbledon last month.
"I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup because of a right shoulder strain that I sustained while preparing for the tournament," Mauresmo said in a statement released by event organizers.
"I am working hard to rehabilitate to get back on court as soon as possible."
Mauresmo won the Rogers Cup in 2002 and 2004.
It was the third consecutive tournament Williams has withdrawn from. She also bypassed California stops in Carlsbad and Carson. Elena Bovina of Russia also withdrew from the U.S. Open tuneup with an injury on Wednesday.
Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, France's Tatiana Golovin and Russian Vera Zvonareva will take the three open spots in the main draw. The Rogers Cup will still feature 40 of the top 44 women's players, including Justine Henin-Herdenne, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce.
The U.S. Open starts on Aug. 28.
