The BJP on Tuesday said the repeated "defiance" of Supreme Court by the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government in the statue construction case was being done "by choice" and it will strain the ties between the executive and the judiciary.
"Mayawati has been adamant and is challenging the Supreme Court. Due to this, a constitutional crisis is emerging which would strain the relations between the executive and the judiciary. I think Mayawati is trying the patience of the Supreme Court," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court had strongly reprimanded the UP government, asking it not to play politics with the court and saying that violation of its order to stop work on construction of memorials seems to have been carried out on instructions from the "highest level".
It has also summoned the state Chief Secretary to be present in person for the next hearing on November 4.
"What Mayawati is doing is an outright attempt to demolish the fine fabric of the Constitution. This will have enormous legal and political ramifications as she has created this logjam by choice," Rudy said.
BJP expressed confidence in the apex court and said it will take right steps to deal with the issue.
