Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati is worried over the BJP poaching into her Dalit vote bank. On Saturday, she reminded the Dalits that they are not Hindus. "The BJP is trying to misguide you all for your votes," she said.

"Usually the members of saffron brigade hate visiting Dalit ghettos in villages but in the election period they are knocking on the door of the Dalits and telling them that they are their brethren. Once the election is over they will again forget you and will cover their faces while visiting Dalit villages," said the former chief minister at a public meeting on IIM road in Lucknow.

The meeting was organised in support of BSP candidate from Lucknow Lok Sabha seat Nakul Dubey and RK Chaudhary from Mohanlalganj.

Had the upper castes, which constitute the core of the BJP, not treated Dalits as untouchables, the Schedule Castes would have progressed, she said, adding, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar launched a struggle against untouchability and embraced Buddhism for the dignity of the community. "Only BSP is the well wisher of the suppressed community," she said while calling upon the Schedule Caste members to vote for the BSP in the Lok Sabha election.

Cautioning the Muslim community, Mayawati said Ambedkar was not against Muslims as projected by the BJP leaders. To protect the rights of the minority communities Ambedkar drafted a secular Constitution, she said.
