Known for accepting expensive gifts and cash from her party members on her birthdays, the enthusiastic leaders and workers dispatched similar offerings to the Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati on Tuesday.
The deputy speaker of Haryana Vidhan Sabha and senior Bahujan Samaj Party leader Akram Khan gifted a SUV to Mayawati on her 57th birthday while a local leader gave her cash of Rs. 57,000.
Offering details of only two were made public whereas the organisers announced that several party supporters had voluntarily gave gifts and cash which would be handed over to the party chief.
At a public celebratory function held at Sector 12 in Karnal, the state legislator from Jagadhri Khan said that the birthday gift of Mahindra Bolero was a token of respect to the Dalit leader.
He handed over keys of the vehicle to the BSP’s national vice president and Rajya Sabha member Rajaram.
However, Rajaram turned down the offer and asked Khan to give the vehicle to the state party unit.
“I will convey your feelings to Behanji but the state unit of the party could best utilize the SUV for strengthening party in Haryana,” said the leader.
Taking a dig at the media for criticizing Mayawati accepting cash etc on birthday functions, Rajaram said that the pure love of BSP supporters for their leader was always taken wrongly.
“All these gifts are used for party activities and supporters are welcomed for the same,” he said.
