Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday asked officials concerned to take pre-emptive steps to deal with any flood-like situation which may arise in the state with the onset of monsoon.

The Chief Minister, who reviewed the preparations for dealing with any problem arising out of heavy rains, asked the officials to identify all sensitive embankments and launch their repair works.

Asking them to ensure their proper moinitoring, she warned that laxity in these works would not be tolerated, an official release here said.

The chief minister asked for regular meetings of steering groups at the district and state level for flood control works besides ensuring proper availability of doctors and mediciens in hospitals in the flood prone areas and potable water.

Directing the officials to set up flood control rooms and chowkis at the district level, she said all preparations should be made in advance to extend relief including foodgrains and kerosene to those affected by floods.

The chief minister said that since most of the rivers in the state originate from Nepal or Uttarakand they cause great damage once water is released by them and directed the officials to ensure continued coordination with them.

She also ordered for appointment of nodal officers for inter-state flood problems and said that water from rivers of the neighbouring states also enter Uttar Pradesh.
