The Uttar Pradesh Government has confirmed NSA invoked by district magistrate against BJP Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi over his alleged hate speeches, official sources said in Lucknow on Thursday.
“The state government has confirmed the order of Pilibhit district administration to invoke NSA against Gandhi in the interest of maintenance of law and order,” a senior home department official said.
Varun was booked under NSA on March 29 and as per the law NSA has to be confirmed/revoked within 12 days by the state government, he said.
Varun can now approach NSA advisory board, which is scheduled to meet on April 18, he added.
Varun has already challenged his detention under NSA in Supreme Court, which will be hearing the case on April 13.
The 29-year-old leader was also booked under Section 307 IPC (attempt to murder), sections 147, 148 and 149 (rioting and related offences), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 336 (doing any act that endangers human life or the personal safety of others).
Varun also faces charges under certain sections of IPC relating to public safety and certain state Acts after his supporters clashed with the police, the official said.
