After demanding reservation for Muslims and Jats, UP chief minister Mayawati has now urged the Centre to increase the job quota for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) as per their population and extend the same to private sector and judiciary.

The CM has shot off a letter in this regard to PM Manmohan Singh, saying the SC/ST quota had not gone up despite an increase in their population.

The letter said if other backward castes were added to the SC/ST list there should be a proportionate increase (in accordance with their population) in the quota to give them separate reservation. It said SCs and STs had remained deprived for years, as a result their condition on the socio-economic and education fronts had remained poor, she said.

The CM said the BSP-led government had taken a number of steps for the welfare of SCs and STs in the state. Listing her government's steps for welfare of these classes, she said the Centre, however, had remained indifferent and had not replicated them in other parts of the country.
