A MEETING of the ten-member mayoral council had to be called off prematurely today after two members belonging to rival BJP factions allegedly traded the vilest abuses and nearly came to blows following a dispute over the shifting of an assistant engineer. Sources said that most of their verbal exchanges were unprintable.

It all began when MiC member in charge of Planning and Rehabilitation Chandu Shinde sought an answer from Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma on why assistant engineer Vivek Jain was shifted from his zone (Saket) to Harsiddhi at the beginning of the meet.

Before the Commissioner could answer, Lalit Porwal interceded on his behalf declaring that as the administrative head, the Commissioner was well within his rights to post an employee wherever he deemed fit.

When Shinde insisted that the Commissioner furnish an answer, Porwal is learnt to have retorted, “Kya kal ke bachchon se poochh ke kaam karenge?” (Are we supposed to take advice from greenhorns like you?).

This enraged Shinde, who reportedly believes that the transfer was carried out at Porwal’s behest but, even more the remarks seem to have pricked MiC in charge of Law and GAD, Lal Bahadur Verma.

The sources said that Verma, a follower of the PWD Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya camp, then launched into a vicious tirade against Porwal, a supporter of the rival Sumitra Mahajan camp, threatening to set him right. “I carry my resignation in my pocket.

Mess with me and I’ll deal with you good and proper”, were among the printable comments. Though Mayor Dr Uma Shashi, Rajendra Rathore, and the two female MiC members all tried to pacify the trio, neither Porwal nor Shinde and Verma were in a mood to relent. “Porwal finally stormed off muttering, “What is the point of holding a meeting with these drunkards”.  Shashi Sharma adjourned the meet after Porwal’s departure a mere 15 minutes after the proceedings began.
