Mayors want more powers

TEN MAYORS – out of the 14 in MP - on Saturday decided to ask the State Government to give them more ‘powers and privileges’.

They unanimously agreed at their meeting here to demand transfer of Nazul lands of the State Revenue Department to corporations and resolved to ask the State government to vest them with power to recruit contractual employees, especially technical staff, to push developmental activities in their areas.

The meet was presided over by Urban Administration, Development, Housing and Environment Minister Jayant Mallaiya, while Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani was the chief guest.

Indore Mayor Shashi Sharma said that the mayors should be given magisterial powers to deal with encroachments and others issues while Bhopal Mayor Sunil Sood said that the mayors should be given the power to write the Confidential Report (CR) of the municipal commissioners, and they must have the final say in choosing them for their respective corporation.

Sood said the State should provide pension facilities to the mayors on the lines of other public representatives. Jabalpur Mayor Sushila Singh called for cities free of polythene bags.

Pressure on land immense: Mallaiya
Urban Administration, Development, Housing and Environment Minister Jayant Mallaiya demanded that the Centre should bring a law to check population growth. He said that the pressure on the land in Cities had increased immensely. He said that the Nazul land should be transferred to the corporations, for its proper protection from the encroachers and better utilization.
