McGrath selected for Champions Trophy

Glenn McGrath will gear up for the Ashes series by playing in the Champions Trophy to be played in India in October-November.

The Australian selectors on Monday selected the veteran paceman for the mini World Cup after earlier indicating that McGrath might be better off playing state cricket to ease his way back into the national side.

He will also play in the tri-series in Kuala Lumpur starting September 12 where Australia would face India and the West Indies.

The New South Wales bowler has not played since January because of wife Jane's illness but has convinced the selectors to pick him for both the one-day tournaments.

Champions Trophy is the only major international competition Australia has yet to win.

"We've decided that the best way for Glenn to make his way back into international cricket is to play international cricket," chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said.

"We believe the combination of the Malaysian tri-series and the Champions Trophy is ideal preparation for what will be a huge summer of cricket for Glenn."

However, opener Matthew Hayden's recall to one-day cricket appears restricted to the Malaysian tournament, as he has been omitted from the squad for the mini World Cup.

Adam Gilchrist, who will not travel to Kuala Lumpur, returns for the Champions Trophy as Ricky Ponting's deputy, and Shane Watson gets a chance to impress before the Ashes, where he is bidding to make the side as a batting all-rounder.

Of those going to Malaysia, Hayden, Mark Cosgrove, Dan Cullen, Phil Jaques and Brad Haddin have been left out of the Champions Trophy squad.

Australian squad:

Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (wk), Simon Katich, Michael Hussey, Andrew SymondsSymonds, Damien Martyn, Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Brett Lee, Brad Hogg, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Glenn McGrath, Mitchell Johnson.
