THE THREE-MEMBER team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) — that visited Gandhi Medical College (GMC) and its associate Hamidia Hospital here on Friday — is learnt to have noticed various lacunae in the infrastructure and other health facilities, even as it expressed satisfaction too at the functioning of certain other areas at the two institutions.
Although the MCI team did not disclose any of its findings during the inspection, yet well-informed sources said the members noticed several shortcomings during the inspection. Hospital authorities, nonetheless, asserted that the MCI team did not point out any major shortfall in facilities.
The team – including Dr A Desai, Dr Shinoy and Dr Tharu Narayan – began its much-anticipated inspection tour at around 9 am. The members reached first surgery department OPD. Noticing some shortcomings like lack of certain equipment, the team brought it to the notice of the hospital administration, sources said.
From there the team moved on to the casualty section. Members noticed suction equipment were missing, the oxygen set was not functioning properly while some other equipment were also either non-functional or improper.
The sources added the team also pointed out lack of proper drinking water facilities at the Hamidia Hospital besides the absence of a canteen for patients and their attendants. The team also noticed shortage of nursing staff, paramedical staff and other health workers at the hospital.
The MCI, however, expressed satisfaction at the working of the Preventive and Social Medicine (PSM) Department, sources said. The members praised the efforts being made by the HoD Dr S C Tiwari and his staff towards providing better facilities at the department.
The MCI members conducted a minute inspection of the entire hospital and went around all departments, laundry section, store, and incinerator section. After finishing the morning round of inspection, the team conducted a detailed head count of all personnel posted in all the departments of GMC during the afternoon. Each and every staff member was counted and the
MCI team noted details, hospital authorities said.
The MCI team’s visit formed part of the annual inspection that the MCI conducts routinely at medical colleges across the country. The inspection assumes much significance, as it is based on its report that the MCI grants recognition to any medical college for conducting MBBS course.
On November 25, the MCI team would conduct inspection of Sultania Zanana Hospital, medical hostels, Lady Bhor Hospital, Family Planning Association office located at 11 number bus stop and other dispensaries attached to the GMC, sources said. GMC Dean Dr M K Saraswat, Hamidia Hospital Superintendent Dr V K Pandya, HoDs of all departments, members of Central Junior Doctors Association and other doctors were present during the inspection.
