Noted activist Medha Patkar, who led a movement against the construction of a dam over Narmada River, on Monday announced she will support the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as "she felt there was a need for a new brand of politics today".

Patkar said political parties have become deeply corrupt and people’s movements have been waging a political war for a long time.
"In the name of politics, there is loot of water, electricity and of government coffers. We will fight for our people," she said.

"It is time for a new wave in Indian politics…the AAP has the backing of the public… AAP has given a new impetus to people’s movement… they (AAP) have the strength, vision and passion, there is people's strength behind AAP's victory in Delhi," she told reporters.

Along with Patkar, many activists associated with Narmada Bachao Andolan will join the AAP. Patkar said while they will retain the identity of NBA, they will contribute to the policy-making process of the AAP.

"We studied the party’s documents and found that all issues from macro to microeconomics have been covered," she said.

"Reservation for lower castes and other micro and macro level issues need to be resolved. We need to fight for rights of farmers," she added.
