Justifying sting operations, media professionals on Saturday said they were being conducted to protect people's rights but cautioned that they should not be used as tools to settle personal scores.
Speaking at a seminar on "sting operations", Editor-in-chief India TV Rajat Sharma said such operations should be used to protect the rights and interests of the people and eradicate evils, but it should be ensured that they were not misused.
Sting operations were the best method to tell people that there are some who do not do their jobs with responsibilty, Sharma said.
Editor of Prabhat Khabar (Ranchi), Harivansh stressed on the need for a code of conduct while conducting such operations and said greater accountability was needed in the media.
Filmaker and social activist Ashok Pandit, who also spoke, justifed sting operations and said it was because of "honest and dedicated media houses that a common man in India thinks that he is safe and his rights are protected."
