Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has chosen a home away from home in her bid to make it to the state assembly. She is contesting from Shopian district’s Wachi constituency in south Kashmir.
Mehbooba belongs to Bijbehara in central Kashmir’s Anantnag district, from where she was elected to the assembly in 1996. In 2002, she won from Pahalgam in the same district.
Mehbooba believes she still enjoys the support of a large section of the people in South Kashmir. “Entire South Kashmir is my home. I can seek election from anywhere I like,” she said.
Even today most people in the two constituencies of Shopian and Wachi are in a defiant mood. Angry residents attacked poll rallies of various candidates including that of Mehbooba in Pulwama and Shopian in the last two days.
