PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has vacated the chief ministerial residence allotted to her father, former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, in Jammu.
A senior PDP leader, wishing not to be quoted, said Mehbooba Mufti had vacated the official residence last week. She and her mother Begum Gulahan Ara have moved their belongings from the Jammu residence. Mehbooba is now staying at Fairview residence in Srinagar.
Mehbooba’s vacating the residence has further added to the speculations over the fate of the BJP-PDP alliance.
“The BJP-PDP alliance is for six years. The only difference that has come up till now is the untimely and unfortunate demise of Mufti Sayeed. The PDP has to take a first call and only after that we will respond. But the people want early installation of the democratic government and political vacuum should end at the earliest,” said former deputy chief minister and BJP MLA Nirmal Singh.
According to sources, the PDP president is likely to hold a meeting with PM Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah in the first week of February. Political observers say by not retaining the CM’s residence, Mehbooba has tried to send the message that she is not hankering for power.
