The process of linking Noida and Ghaziabad by Metro has started. The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the plan to connect the two cities, which are separated by a highway.
Metro service is set to be extended to Ghaziabad (Vaishali) from Anand Vihar early next month.
In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times on Thursday, Noida Authority chief executive officer (CEO) Rama Raman said, “We have appointed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as consultant for a new Metro line from Noida City Centre (sector 32) to sector 62, bordering NH 24. Once we get there, we will go across the highway and link the Metro lines in both the cities.”
If one were to go to Noida from Ghaziabad now, one had to take the train at Anand Vihar, get off at Yamuna Bank and take another train coming from Dwarka. Currently, on the Noida line, the service ends at City Centre (sector 32).
On extending the service to sector 62, DMRC will prepare a project report in two months. The Noida Authority will pay the corporation R80 lakh for this. The 8-km stretch will cost roughly Rs960 crore.
Though Metro has brought great relief for people in Delhi and the satellite areas, intra-city connectivity continues to be a problem. Despite being a city of more than 150 sectors, there are only six stations in Noida, catering only to nine immediate and as many adjoining sectors.
“The Noida Authority board has approved the Metro extension till sector 62. DMRC had sent a letter of terms of references, which we have accepted. We’re sending our consent,” the Noida CEO said.
This line from sector 32 (City Centre) to sector 62 (NH-24) will run through sector 71, which will be a junction station with a line branching out to Bodaki in Greater Noida via sector 121 (Noida Extension).
The Noida Authority board has approved this line also. “The extension of Metro up to NH 24 will be a major relief to people commuting within Noida and also going to Ghaziabad,” the CEO said.
The areas that will have Metro connectivity are sectors 32, 34, 35, Hoshiyarpur, sector 51, 52, 71, Noida Extension Marg, Sarfabad, sector 60, 61, 62, 63 and NH 24.
The CEO of Noida Authority said he will meet DMRC officials next week to discuss the alignments for a new line from Noida to south Delhi.
The detailed project report is ready. A project executor will soon be appointed to take Metro services to Greater Noida.
Noida Authority has asked the DMRC to conduct a techno-feasibility study for another Metro line from sector 71 to Greater Noida.
He said: “We are also building a Metro line from sector 94/124 to sector 142 via sector 44 (allowing Greater Noida residents to go to south Delhi without coming to Noida).”
