GOOD NEWS for rail passengers travelling in sleeper coaches. They can sit comfortably even if a middle berth is open.
Yes, the Indian Railways has struck a novel idea that would give its passengers relief from sitting cramped in lower berth for hours while a fellow passenger is ‘snoring’ in a middle berth pressing against his or her head.
The height of sleeper coaches will be increased.
“The change is being tried with Gareeb Rath,” said the chairman Railway Board (CRB) JP Batra. He was on a day’s visit to Lucknow to preside over the 27th Governing Council meeting of Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
CRB informed that three more ‘Gareeb raths’ were ready to hit the tracks.
“Height of coaches for ‘Gareeb raths’ would be increased so that the middle berth remains open without causing any inconvenience to passengers sitting in the lower berths,” said the CRB. Uncomfortable seating arrangement also makes a journey tiresome.
Batra said if the experiment of increasing the height of coaches in the ‘Gareeb raths’ were proved beneficial, similar changes would be effected in other sleeper coaches. Of the three rakes, one rake was ready to roll out. “It will take another 15 days for the modified coach to run,” he added.
