Security forces foiled a militant attempt to cause disturbances in the Kashmir valley, particularly in the frontier district of Kupwara, when two hideouts were busted and a large cache of arms and ammunition recovered, a defence ministry spokesman said here on Wednesday.

He said a tip-off was received from field sources that militants have dumped arms and ammnunition in the woods at Karalsandar forest in the frontier district of Kupwara.

A massive search operation was launched by Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and state police personnel in the woods. However, after a long search in the dense forest, security forces finally busted the hideout in general area at Haran top.

He said a large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the hideout.

The recovery included assault rifles, pistol, UBGL and magazines and ammunition. However, no one was arrested as the militants had fled the area before the operation.

Spokesman said on January 19 also, one old underground arms cache was busted in General Area Sangri-Magam Forest by joint operations of Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police.

He said a large quantity of arms and ammunition like assault rifles, ammunition, RPG rounds, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and Chinese grenades were recovered.

These recoveries have foiled likely attempts of militants to use these explosives and weapons to initiate unrest in the region, he added.
