An unidentified militant was killed in a gunbattle with security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.
The gunbattle took place at Tankapora in Kalaroos, 120 kms from Srinagar, when an army party challenged militants moving near the LoC under the cover of darkness late last night, officials said on Sunday.
They said security forces had laid an ambush in the area after observing movement of suspected militants.
The troops asked the militants to surrender but they opened fire and in the ensuing encounter, an ultra was killed, they said adding an AK 47 rifle, two magazines, 18 rounds, two hand grenades and a damaged wireless set were recovered from his possession.
The identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was yet to be ascertained and a search operation was on to track down his other associates.
