A militant was shot dead in an encounter with police commandos in Imphal East district of Manipur, official sources said on Monday.
Commandos, attached to Imphal East district police, were combing Bamon Kampu area to track down some militants when the latter fired at them on Sunday.
In the ensuing encounter, an unidentified militant was killed and others escaped towards a nearby hill, the sources said.
One 9mm pistol, one magazine with four rounds of ammunition, some documents and a bag were recovered from the victim.
The police suspected him to be a member of Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) because they had earlier received reports that some RPF members were loitering around in the area for the past few days.
Over 260 persons, including civilians, have been killed in militancy-related incidents in Manipur this year.
