A divisional commander of the Jaish-e-Muhammad was killed in an encounter with the security forces in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Wednesday.
"On specific information regarding the presence of armed militants in the village, the police, an army unit and the CRPF launched a joint operation," a police spokesman said.
The militants, hiding in the village, fired at the search party and an encounter broke out.
"Altaf Baba alias Gazi Baba (the one killed) was involved in the civilian killings and abduction," the spokesman said.
The security forces had cordoned off the village, 35 km south of Srinagar.
