Suspected militants threw grenade and fired shots at a police check post near Kani Pora on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Sunday evening.
Preliminary reports suggest that a police party assigned with random checking of vehicles and people tried to stop a vehicle when suspected militants hurled a grenade.
"A live grenade was thrown at us. It did not explode," said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity. The fleeing militants also fired some shots before speeding up from the stop as the police personnel took positions to retaliate the fire.
No one was injured in the incident. A posse of police personnel and senior police personnel rushed to the spot. The security has been beefed up on the national highway. Reports suggest that the vehicle fled towards the Srinagar-Baramulla highway.
The incident has come just two days after militants attacked police party and killed four cops in north Kashmir's Hygam area.
Grenade recovered close to police station
Jammu: A grenade was recovered in the vicinity of Thathari police station in Doda district, a senior police official said on Monday. The bomb was placed in two parts on a link road adjoining the police station. However, it was neutralised in time, Doda SSP Arif Rishu told PTI on Monday.
It was recovered on Sunday with the lever at one spot and the body at another, he said.
Rishu denied that it was an attempt to target chief secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, who was on visit to Doda. The incident had nothing to do with the chief secretary's visit. It was found from a completely different location and Khandey was not supposed to travel to the area, he said. However, he said investigation was on to establish the details: PTI
