"A live grenade was thrown at us. It did not explode," said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity. The fleeing militants also fired some shots before speeding up from the stop as the police personnel took positions to retaliate the fire.

It was recovered on Sunday with the lever at one spot and the body at another, he said.

Rishu denied that it was an attempt to target chief secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khandey, who was on visit to Doda. The incident had nothing to do with the chief secretary's visit.
