In a broad daylight attack on security personnel in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir, militants shot dead a police officer and injured two constables at Chadoora village in Budgam district on Monday afternoon.

Chadoora is around 15km from capital Srinagar.

A police spokesperson said "The station house officer (SHO) was attacked in Chadoora and the officer is no more".

According the local police, SHO Shabir Ahmed and the constables were out on patrol when the militant fired on them from close range at the main market in Chadoora. The incident took place at around 1pm.

By the time security forces cordoned off the area, the militants managed to escape. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack till now.

The incident came within days of director general of police (DGP) Ashok Prasad saying that police personnel have been given strict instructions for adhering to standard operating procedures (SOP) while on duty.

According to him, as part of a deliberate strategy, militants in the valley are carrying out more audacious and better-planned attacks on security forces this year, forcing police to review their strategy.

"Militants have changed their tactics in Kashmir. Militant attacks on common people have come down. But they are targetting police and security forces in a planned manner," Prasad said.

Though overall violence in the Kashmir region has been waning in recent years, authorities fear a surge in violence as militants are said to be carrying out fresh recruitment.
