A gunfight sparked off in frontier district of Kupwara on Saturday near the Line of Control when militants attempted to sneak into Kashmir valley. In the ongoing operation, three militants were killed.

"Three infiltrating terrorists have been killed so far in Uri sector of the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla," said Lieutenant Colonel J S Brar, spokesman of the army's Srinagar-based 15th corps.

The soldiers spotted a group of heavily armed militants in the morning and were challenged. “They opened indiscriminate firing, which triggered a gunfight. It’s still on in the area," said Brar.

There is sudden spurt in encounters in Kashmir valley in recent weeks and also number of infiltration is showing upward trend. Army claimed to have killed nearly 100 militants in these encounters.
