All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi courted fresh controversy when he objected to the Bharat Ratna conferred on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the Padma Vibhushan given to BJP patriarch LK Advani.
Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Ayodhya controversy - Ramjanmabhoomi - fiction or reality’ in Hyderabad on Sunday, Owaisi spoke about the two BJP leaders’ alleged role in the demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.
The Hyderabad MP made references to the speeches made by Vajpayee a day before the demolition and to the cases filed against Advani regarding the mosque’s demolition.

Owaisi then expressed his displeasure over the Narendra Modi government’s decision to confer the nation’s highest honour on Vajpayee and has observed that it points to the state of affairs in the country now.
His remarks attracted criticism from various quarters especially the BJP, which accused AIMIM of rubble rousing to gain attention.
AIMIM, a Hyderabad-based party, has been trying to branch out of south Indian politics. It recently tasted some success in Maharashtra polls where it won two assembly seats.
