A seven-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped in a village of Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, the police said on Tuesday.
The girl was allegedly raped Monday by a man of her locality in the Girwan village in Banda district, about 200 km from here.
"She alleged that Laloo Yadav abducted her while she was alone in the fields and took her to a secluded place and raped her. We have sent the victim for medical examination and are awaiting the medical reports," police inspector Pradeep Kumar Chaudhary told IANS on telephone.
He said the accused has been arrested.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 240 rape cases against Dalit women were reported in 2006 and the number increased to 318 in 2007, the year Dalit icon chief minister Mayawati came to power.
The data for 2008 is not available with NCRB but a non-government organisation Dynamic Action Group puts the figure for the first six months of last year at 100.
