The police on Saturday disallowed moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's scheduled seminar in the old city's Khanyar area, which is incidentally constituency of state rural and panchayat minister Ali Muhammad Sagar, also senior National Conference leader.
Moderate Hurriyat spokesman Shahid-ul-Islam told the HT that there was a police clampdown on venue since morning.
"Mirwaiz sahib was not allowed to move out of his Nigeen house after 2 pm," he alleged.
The Hurriyat Conference, while condemning the crackdown, said, "The use of force and terror to foil a seminar organised by the Awami Action Committee in Khanyar to pay tributes to late Moulvi Mohammad Farooq is highly condemnable," said the Hurriyat spokesman.
The Mirwaiz is observing weeklong functions on 23rd martyrdom anniversary of his father Moulvi Farooq, who was assassinated on May 21, 1990.
The Hurriyat spokesman alleged that the police seized vehicles. "Workers and activists of the party were terrorized and harassed. The posters and banners of the party at several places in the city were removed," said the spokesman, adding that the government had already been informed about the programme in advance.
