In the third incident of its kind in 10 days in Uttar Pradesh, unidentified miscreants shot dead Bara police station officer (SO) Rajendra Prasad Dubey, while he was trying to stop their vehicle, in Ghurpur area of Allahabad district on Friday. The miscreants managed to escape unchallenged in their car.
On June 5 unidentified criminals shot dead the gunner of a police officer in Saharanpur and on June 7 a constable was killed in a police encounter with criminals in Bareilly district.
In Friday’s incident, Dubey was trailing the miscreants in his car after being tipped off by a person on the mobile. Before going after the miscreants, he telephoned Shankargarh and Bara police stations to send reinforcements.
But before help could come Dubey caught up with the miscreants on the hills of Lethar. The miscreants, sensing trouble, stopped the car and came out. When the SO reached close to them and asked for their identity, one of them pulled out a revolver, shot him from at point blank range and fled.
Even after being shot, the SO made an attempt to shoot at the miscreants but collapsed before he could pull the trigger of his revolver. He reportedly succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Meanwhile, Fatehpur, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Banda and Mirzapur superintendents of police have been alerted to ensure checking of vehicles to nab the assailants, police said.
