His family reported the matter at the local police station, after which a search operation was launched.

Many teams were rushed to locations in New Delhi

and Haryana to look for the officer. Speaking to Hindustan Times over phone on Monday, Jain, who has been at the centre of a row over the allotment of his official residence, said he was disturbed by the controversy and so wanted to spend time alone.

“As settlement commissioner, I was allotted an official bungalow. But people in the department behaved as if I had encroached upon public property," Jain said.

“I was being treated as an utterly bad official only because I took possession of the house before the completion of formalities.”

He said he is in good health and there was nothing to worry about. "I travelled to various parts of Himachal Pradesh on public roadways over the last few days," he said.

He said he came to know about his wife's poor health through the media and decided to come back.

"I had mentioned in my letter dropped that I would be back after things were resolved. I have kept my promise. Now that I have been assured an accommodation as per my office, I am relaxed and would join the office after 10 days," he said. "I do not have a grudge against anyone."
