Rajasthan Police have registered a case against Baran MLA (Independent) Parmod Jain ‘bhaya’ and three others for organising 13 child marriages.

BJP leader Naresh Meena had complained to the district administration about the event, which violates the Child Marriage Act, and demanded strong action against the

culprits.

Baran District Collector Pritma B. Yashwant then ordered an inquiry that was conducted by a four-member committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Siya

Ram Meena.

The others on the panel were Additional SP S.N. Khinchi, Deputy SP Shyam Singh and SDM Vishnu Goya.

The report was submitted to Yashwant on Saturday.

“A committee has confirmed that 13 child marriages took place, so a case has been registered against the organisers, including the MLA,” the District

Collector said.

On April 21, a mass wedding function was organised by Bada Jankalyan Samiti of Baran, which was attended by AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan Pradesh Committee chief Dr C.P. Joshi and several other Congress leaders who had blessed

the couples.

Baran MLA Parmod said: “The Samiti got the age of every girl and boy attested from a notary or pardhan of the respective panchayat. No child marriage

took place.”

He accused the administration of acting at the behest of the state government.

Reacting sharply, PCC chief Joshi said: “The government is trying to settle scores with political rivals through the district administration. The onus of preventing child marriages rests with the administration, which had failed in its duty.”

“Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is upset because the area falls in her son’s Lok Sabha constituency and a large crowd had gathered at Baran to listen the Congress leaders. The marriage ceremony was already over when we reached the spot.”
